PRODUCT INSTRUCTIONS
It’s essential to read through all the instructions so that you can get the best results with your Maintain the EDGE® sharpener.
It is recommended that new skates be sharpened the first time by a powered grinder. It can be done manually with a Maintain the EDGE® Sharpener but it will take a long time to sharpen them the first time. After the initial sharpening, Maintain the EDGE® works to keep your blades at your desired sharpness.

STEP 1
Place your Maintain the EDGE® sharpener over the skate blade as shown above.
STEP 2
Tighten the two black thumb screws until they are snug against the blade. The goal is to centre the stone and remove any play in the sharpener while allowing the sharpener to move along the length of the blade with minimal exertion.
SEE TIP
Tip #1 – A good reference for proper clamping of the sharpener is to tighten until the skate can almost be held upside down by the sharpener. The tighter the blade is clamped, the more centered the stone and even the edges.
STEP 3
Slide the tool along the full length of the blade back and forth for 1-3 minutes. Make sure to hold the skate so the movement of your elbow is parallel to the skate blade. This will help to keep the edges even.
SEE TIP
Tip #1 –You can start with shorter strokes to work on a more damaged section of the blade, but always finish with full strokes for the best result.
Tip #2 – Flip the skate where the toe is pointing in the opposite direction half way through.
STEP 4
Slide your fingernail up the blade to the edge to feel for a burr. You will feel the edge catch your fingernail if there is a burr. If a burr is felt, then go to Step 5.
SEE TIP
Tip – Feel all along the blade for the burr, especially the middle inside edge that is used most. Skates have two edges (inside and outside). The inside edge is the edge closest to the other skate when you have them on.
STEP 5
Step 5: Move the deburring stone along the sides of the blade, holding it flat to the blade. Do this on both sides of the blade to clean up each edge. Do this until you no longer feel the burr with your fingernail as shown in Step 4.
SEE TIP
Tip - This finishes the edge to be a fine, sharp edge. If a burr is left on, the skate will not feel sharp on the ice. Failure to do this step makes the skates feel dull.
